After we have looked at and discussed

various artworks from the Harlem

Renaissance and other artworks

created by artists inspired by Jazz

music, you will research various aspects

of the Harlem Renaissance era. You will

look at fashion and street scenes of Harlem, New York in the 1920’s, as well as musical instruments

used by Jazz musicians.

 

We are going to create a self-portrait that puts us in the genre (or activity within the local scene) of this time in history. To portray your “self ” authentically, you will first make three different sketches to create a blueprint for your final artwork.  You will need three pieces of paper and a pencil.

 

To get a feeling of Harlem, New York in the 1920’s you will be going to Internet resources to research the following areas individually. These areas will make up three of the four areas of your artwork:

•Scenes of Harlem, New York in the 1920’s

•Fashion from this era (1920’s) in history

•Various instruments used by Jazz Musicians

 

You will look through the websites without drawing the first time, finding something that interests you about each area.

Take out your sketch paper:

 

Go to each website resource again individually. This time find something you like about the clothing, environment and choose an instrument that you like. When you go to each resource, make three individual practice sketches that will be combined to make a final Self-portrait from the Harlem Renaissance/Jazz Music Genre. The fourth part of your drawing will be your self-portrait, and will be completed in the art room.
